I have real trouble preventing myself from laughing at the most unusual places. When people talk to me,(strangers, professors, etc), I just suddenly(not b/c of the context of the situation) laugh. I do everything to stop, I hide my face, bite my lips, pinch my hands, but they all seem to fail. Any solutions that would not make me laugh, or a keen technique to disguise my laugh, esp a smirk?

That can be a difficult thing. The brain reacts off key sometime like maybe you hear that a good Friend dies and you laugh..it's like a short circuit you are not happy it is just the shock has caused this.

You can get counseling to help this with biofeedback. meanwhile bite your tongue a bit and think of yourself in the most sad event you can think of. If it still happens just say you are sorry to the person and that it is uncontrollable and you indeed are working on it.

Good Luck.

As soon as your response starts, it is already too late.
You can control how loud you laugh and how long.
All I can think of is that you keep being mindful and try to tone it down. Also, just tell the person that you giggle when you are nervous, which is the truth.
What you need help with is the nervousness. That might take some counseling and even some medication. You and a doctor can decide what is best.
It is going to take awhile. Be patient. You can fix this.
C. :)!!

This is a common problem. Many people laugh when in uncomfortable situation. You just have to continue doing what you are doing. Practice and be aware. It is not something you do on purpose so it is hard to control.

Put yourself into situation where you know your normal response would be inappropriate and since you are intentionally setting yourself up you can practice controlling your response. Your response is a lot like people who stutter. Give them a song and they can sing it perfectly, but as them a question and they have a problem.

Lots of luck.

It sounds like you are using laughter or smirking to cover up your anxiety. Look into what makes you anxious, and then speak to a counselor about this. You can help yourself, but it will go quicker if you seek out a professional who deals with anxiety issues. There are medicines, but best to work with professional on this; never let them give you too much medication. If you do take meds. be sure you feel the same as before, not sleepy, etc. Medications are to make you "normal" again, not to make you different. It balances your brain chemistry enough to make you behave correctly in social situations.

cough and run. It's a joke within itself in my family.
I think you have a quirky sense of humor and laugh easily anyway.we have some kind of instinct... like the person we are supposed to be listening to gets nervous...or is talking thru his butt
or selling a useless product or being insincere by pretending to be sincere our whole family does this and it started with our mom... we wind up following each other out of funerals sales meetings and even choir practice... there go the Anderson Kids.... we leave so we don't get other people started. As adults we rarely go to an event together but we can tell when the crowd starts laughing one of the other of us has shown up. I just get up and stand at the back..elbows ****** and ready to run...... with my brother :) lol

Eliminate stimulants from your diet. Exercise in the A.M.. Learn a form of meditation such as Yoga or Tai Chi. Breath in slow and deep when the feeling is upon you. DO NOT be formulating a response as the person is talking. Slow down and simply listen to what is being communicated. Learn to respond with affirmation of THEIR point not the perfect response you formulated under pressure.

It sounds like nervous or social laughter. In other words, you're not laughing becuase something's funny, but becuase you're nervous, there's a break in conversation, ect.

Try to listen more carefully to the ppl you're talking to. If you can see them as human, try to listen so well that you read between the lines and figure out what they're interested in, how they feel about things, ect, it may take some of the pressure off you.

you should ask urself why do u laugh at inappropriate situations??..is it because u r nervous or is it because u are scared of makin a mistake....what is ur laughter covering up for??...it may be deeper than u think...some ppl laugh inappropariately because its their defense mechanism against either nervousness, shyness, anxiety and even anger!!..it is really very vast..whatevr u do dnt try to disguise it ...try to find the reason behind it and get urself cured of this bad habit...see a therapist if possible...it will help..

I tend to laugh when I am nervous....if you find an answer to stop this, let me know...I have done it for years and like you it is always in inappropriate situations. I try to relax, and really concentrate on not becoming nervous, making an effort to not giggle. Good luck.
