How to do household chores. Most of what I do in terms of washing dishes, cleaning, doing laundry, I learned when I was young because my mother and father both worked full-time. I'm glad now every time I visit a friend whose home is completely out of control.

I was raised on the farm and was taught to be a hard worker and work until the job was finished, no matter how tired I was. At the time I hated it but that trait is something I am admired for and I thank my parents every day for the gift they gave me.

Patience, hard work and family time.
Saturdays were clean the house day, and we couldn't have any fun until it was done. It drove us crazy, but the fun was always more fun when we worked for it. Every Sunday was "family day". I sometimes hated it because I wanted to hang out with my friends. But I am closer to my family now, and I don't even talk to my friends who were my friends back then.

How to read.
Sorry, I just read the "hated at the time" part. Sorry, I loved learning how to read.
It totally baffles me how many parents these days think it's up to schools to teach their children how to read. It actually gets me angry when I hear that 40% of children here (in the UK) leave primary school unable to read properly.

Well this is not exactly the answer you are looking for but one thing they always made me do was try everything. More in the food sense. They always said "you have to try it once. If you don't like it you don't have to finish it; but you must try"
