This guy i know in my hobby class is going through a bad phase in personal life. He is 28, looks quite settled, intelligent, well informed & read. Most of the times he is quite funny and mostly he jokes upon himself. He isn't flirting with anyone though.
Does he have low self esteem? Confidence issues or trying to grab attention?

I think he may just be keeping a low profile, not wishing to indulge in anything else just yet until he gets over and through his personal problems.
I doubt he has low self esteem, but something may of happened to dent his confidence a bit.
I wouldnt press him for answers, just allow him to do his own thing for now until he uncloggs his mind..
Your description is quite favourable to him I think, and his joking is a positive thing that probably disguises an underlying insecurity or something.

Sounds like he has his life together and is a confident well rounded person. Maybe he isn't flirting w/anyone because he isn't looking for anyone @the moment. Not all single people are out looking for a significant other. Maybe he is just a jokester & likes being funny. Anyone who can laugh @ themsleves isn't lacking in the confidence department. Ya know? In my opinion it just sounds like he is happy being single and enjoying the freedom.

Depending on WHAT kind of bad phase in his personal life. He may just enjoy keeping the atmosphere "light/humorous". Perhaps it helps him to Not think about what ever bad things are happening, by being a jokester?

he might be seeing someone and doesnt share his personal information in a hobby class or he's just happily single

Do you like him? Because if he has low self esteem and you like him i think you should ask him out, even if he says no it will probably make him feel better.

You should go out with friends more - People like people who are who they are -- Even if that means there different. It's the different people who are to shy to be who they are that come off weird.
