"The Lord helps those who help themselves".
Apparently some of us REALLY need help....PROFESSIONAL help.

Prayer works in the sense that it actually does give some people a 'center'. This translates into a better atitude. That's a good thing. Does prayer send a message to 'God'? I dunno. If it does, then it must be possible, with the proper technology, to dial direct to the Diety of your choice. I once wrote a piece for a national magazine on that subject....the 'Christians' came after me with torches and pitchforks. I learned my lesson! When it comes to prayer, people that pray make certain assumptions. One is that 'God' is actually a benevolent character....sort of like your favorite grandfather who can be counted on to cut you a lot more slack than your mom and dad. Second assumption assumes that 'God' is existential and providential. That is, 'He' exists outside ourselves and is of the mind not only grant favors, but has the ability to do so. We don't know either way about that, but if true it does seem a bit hit or miss. Personally, to the extent that I'm a believer at all, my concept is that 'God' is like your pal Fred....always willing to listen, but having limited ability to help...but of course sometimes all you need is someone to listen so that's a win right there. As far as health insurance....'pray' to your congress critter. Make an 'offering'...send five bucks with an offer of more if he/she or it takes the bait.....then pray he/she or it isn't a Republican because in that case he/she or it has your five buck and you have bupkis! Still, it's worth a shot!

Apparently you have never heard of the Christian Scientists who base their health care entirely on prayer. The cost of health care is the fastest rising commodity in the U.S. We pay far more for it and get far less from it then ever. It is really past time for some kind of action.

It would be nice if we could take the trillions this war is going to cost and put it to better use in the US. Think of how much that money could be used to help those who NEED help.
Prayer can work but we need a more tangible plan. We need to take care of our own citizens, first.

So then how come we need penicillin? When all we had was prayer 90% of the badly injured died of infection, since we have penicillin and other anti-biotics less than 10% die of infection whether we pray or not.
