Any original work is indeed automatically copyrighted, but if you wish to further protect your work, you can register your work with the Library of Congress by following the instructions regarding literary works on their website. Here's the link for quick reference:

If you have a hard copy on your computer, just date it and it is copyrighted. To get it in the Library of Congress and get a loc number for your copyright just go to the web and ask"how do I ge something copyrighted?" Bet you get the answer.
