Are there any compatibility issues I need to know about?

With Compaq, there are *always* compatibility issues. You're going to have a hell of a time just getting into the *case*.

To minimize the possibility of making the problem worse, it's always best to send Compaq systems into the dealer even for minor re-configurations.

Of course, they'll charge you for that. Quite a racket, there. Might be more cost effective just to buy a new computer. One that is *not* a Compaq system, so you can do your own repairs confidently.

The only issue will probably be trying to find an 80 GB HD. With HD sizes at 1 TeraByte(1024 GB), finding such a small HD will be very difficult.

I recently purchased a 500 GB HD for $99 at Best Buy.

Western Digital still sells a 80GB HDD. I like them because they're quiet, and have installation software with them,(disk), that's easy to use. You have no operating system now, you know that right? It's on your old, fried HDD. You may want to go to Walmart, and get WinXp,(full version, not upgrade!) I can't recommend WinVista, at least not right now. You may also want to check out Ubuntu 7.10,(Gutsy Gibbon). It's free, and haven't ever had ANY problems connecting to the net,(Mozilla Firefox is the default browser).
