I just bought a new laptop to replace old. I used an upgrade on the old computer, so I can't just put the software on the new computer. I want to transfer from one to the other, but have little skills beyond word processing and surfing the web. Easiest way please.

you need the original cd that put the software on the old pc BEFORE you upgraded it. you have to install the old version on the new pc then upgrade the new pc with the upgrade cd.

if you dont have the original cd, ask around. i'm sure your friends have a copy hanging around. if you dont get your hands on a full copy, you'd have to BUY a new one (kinda expensive) and who wants to do that? the upgrade cd needs the old version installed BEFORE the upgrade can take place. good luck

What you are asking to do may violate the terms of your Microsoft License agreement, and may not be a very good alternative in any event. That said, here's how you go about the legal ways of doing it:

If you are concerned about your documents and files, XP and Vista have the "File and Settings Transfer Wizard" (Under AllPrograms->Accessories->System Tools). If both computers are on the same network, you can transfer the data over the network, if not, then you can burn to DVD, CD, or use an external drive to copy the data. Then you run FSTW on the new computer, and wallah! There are your files and settings.

If what you have are programs, reinstall then on the new laptop from CD (or download file). Programs have to register themselves with the Operating System in a database of programs and settings called the registry, so you can't just copy them like files. For Office 2000, you can completely replace it with OpenOffice, from OpenOffice.org (free!) The download is about 120Mb, so find a broadband or DSL connection to do it. It will read and write all of your document formats.

There is another alternative. Get yourself another laptop hard drive. Buy a program called Ghost (from Symantec). You may need to buy some USB/laptop drive adapters to make it work. Copy the drive image from your old laptop drive to your new drive. DO NOT USE THE DRIVE INSIDE THE NEW LAPTOP. Put it aside and keep it safe.

You should be able to put the new drive in the new laptop, then boot from your Windows 2000 CD and do a repair, using the Windows 2000 license key from your old laptop. Here's where the trouble comes: there may not be device drivers (Software needed to make the hardware work) for the new laptop under the old operating system. In short, the old software may not understand the new machine. In that event, put the original drive from the new laptop back in, and transfer your files or reinstall programs. If you are lucky, and Windows2K does work, you will still have to take the sticker off the old laptop and sell it / donate it / recycle it without an operating system, because the license for Windows is only for one computer at a time.
