hi andrew
this is bad luck, however laptop drives are pretty easy to fix,its quite straight forward and inexpensive to buy
you need to purchase a 2.5" laptop drive such as the Western Digital Scorpio 120GB 5400RPM ATA-100 8MB Cache from http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-147-WD&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=304,is a large capacity laptop drive and under £50
to fit it you need to locate the current drive, its normally secured in a drive bay however check the laptops manual for the exact position
the when you take the drive from the laptop it will be in a frame or holder, remove it from that and replace the drive with your new one, then push back into the laptops drives slot
you will then need a copy of windows xp or vista and re-install a operating system on your laptop,if money is a problem you could allways use linux which is free to download and use in some cases
a good linux to use and the best linux in my opinion is "mandriva linux" from http://www.mandriva.com/,however the dvd version(which is better)is a massive 3gb download so be prepared
any problems let me know
good luck andrew !

You don't tell us how you know the drive is knackered. Give us more information and we might be able to help. If we can't help then getting someone to put a new hard drive in a laptop is not that expensive. I don't really see the problem.
