I think this is where Gothic novels got their start! All from Dick and Jane stories!
IN seriousness, we learned to sight read....and every night, I would get help on my lessons from my mother...and every night I would hear my mother raising hell about the way we were being taught to read! She insisted that I also learn to phonetically work out words...IF it had not been for Mom, I have no idea how well I would read, certainly not as well as I do today. How well I remember our little 'readers," with the colorful pictures. They worked well enough to be brought BACK into the school system, considering that most HS grads cannot read ! Something is seriously wrong in our education system. Perhaps some children SHOULD be left behind until they learn to grade expectations! Forget the embarrassment....perhaps with the threat of embarrassment, more would have incentive to learn while given the chance.
Peace and love, Goldwing

Dick and Jane and Father and Mother and Spot and Puff.

Who could forget them?

I already knew how to read before I started school. I come from a reading family and my mother taught us all to read - starting with the "funny papers" (today, known as comics)..I thought the Dick and Jane books were cute but I had mine memorized before the end of the first month of school. Teacher was SOOOOO mad...actually told my mother that she should not be providing us with books at home - that the schools made those decisions.

I don't recall what my mother answered but, she was a firebrand and I'll bet she set that woman on her ear.

I did and even then they were BORRRRRRING! I learned more by reading the funny papers and comic books. First odd word I remember was with Bugs Bunny as he was walking down a street he saw an ANTIKEW store. That's how it looked, then my grandma corrected me in how it was pronounced (she's the one who got me a library card on my 5th birthday). I can still picture that winter day in my grandma's trailer with the wind howling and the snow building up along side the fence.
See Dick? See Jane? They're maladjusted.
Then in 2nd grade, I ran across MOSQUITO and had NO idea how to pronounce it. Another winter day. I had just picked some pu.ssy (yahoo asterisked that word!) willows for grandma before coming in and doing some reading.
Odd what brings back memories.

Yes, I did. And my mother bought me two books from that
series for me to practice with at home. I wish I had those two
copies today. They are worth a chunk of money to collectors
I found when watching the Antiques Roadshow on TV once.
I never dreamed they'ed be worth that much today. I have
no idea where mine went. Probably passed down to my
cousins since alot of my things were, being the oldest in our
extended family. Well now that I have dated myself well, I
shall move on to another question LOL. Well at least, I didn't
say I learned from a McGuffy's Reader. That was back in
the turn of the century LOL.

I did and I really liked Dick and Jane, the teacher also taught us phonics, we moved from Arizona to Calif. when I was in the fourth grade, what a shock, half the class couldn't read I was elevated into the sixth grade reading class I got all As. What a shock, I never learned a thing in that school, so my folks put me in a private school, which they really could not afford.

I did. I just picked up some original Dick and Jane books at a rummage sale. They're a bit tattered but they sure do bring back the memories.

No, my father taught me to read at home before I started kindergarten..but we did have the Dick and Jane books at school..Dad taught me phonetically..and we sounded out words every day

It was the depression years and he had no work..part time some times..he taught me a lot...how to identify trees by bark as well as leaves..how to identify birds by their calls..to to hold a honey bee so it wouldn't string you...what part of the snake to pick it up by...how to swim..to ice skate..to eat soup so it wouldn't drip from the spoon...

So many memories...so much love..

I sure did. I still have a few of those books and my kids learned to read from them too. Mother and Father.... not mommy and daddy! Grandmother and Grandfather too. The illustrations in those books are just darling.
