I would recommend watching Gotti (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116441/),The Godfather trillogy, Scarface and The Untouchables.
Here are some info on La Cosa Nostra (literal meaning is "our affair")

Cosa Nostra is a Sicilian criminal secret society which first developed in the mid-19th century in Sicily. An offshoot emerged on the East Coast of the United States but locating it is very hard since its operations are confidential in nature.

Watch the Godfather movies, as they are loosely based on the Cosa Nostra, and a very well known new York crime family.

Here's your best answer thus far. =) At present, I'm actually compiling a playlist full of real and verified cosa nostra members and all things associated with it....as far as YouTube can provide anyway. Here's the url: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=78D38ED2781431F3
Of course this can't answer all your questions about it, but it'll give you a leap in the right direction. It's nothing like you may have seen in films either. We might view them as being debonair, quick witted and "businesslike", but beneath that facade was cold blooded and ruthless men. Enjoy the lawlessness, it's fascinating.

Mafia groups in the United States first became influential in the New York City area, gradually progressing from small neighborhood operations to citywide and even international organizations. Five families dominated, named for prominent early members - the Bonanno family, the Colombo family, the Gambino family, the Genovese family, and the Lucchese family. Each family was ultimately controlled by a boss, who was insulated from actual operations by several layers of authority. The boss' closest and most trusted advisor was referred to as the consigliere ("counselor" in Italian). An underboss was possible as well. There were then a number of regimes with a varying number of soldiers who conducted actual operations.*

Contact the Italian American Historical Society. Some fiction by Mario Puzo would be helpful. Godfather 1 is the most realistic.
