The good news is that the most common major for freshmen in college is "undeclared". One of the advantages of college is that it allows you to explore the possibilities and settle on what interests you while you are there. You don't need to narrow your options yet; in fact, if you really wanted to, you could double-major in English and art (most schools don't have undergrads specialize as narrowly as photography and American literature). And as someone said, there are a lot of possibilities for an English major other than being an English teacher - having good reading and writing skills comes in handy in many careers.

Dear OK Go,
I would say follow your heart. I was at one point in the same situation as you. I am also a very artistic person, and I love to paint still life in oil paint. For work reasons I developed an interest in photography. I was not sure what I should or should not do so sat down and made a pros and cons list. You also need to make sure that in either professions, what is the future like as far as employment demands. I personally opted to go for something totally different, and majored in it, and have not really regretted that decision of mine. But my friend you are not me. What you can also do is go speak to your career councillors at your college and get their input as well. Make sure you really do your research so that in the future there is no room for regret. Good Luck and sorry if I have not been much help. Keep in touch and let me know what you have decided.

If you major in American literature, it doesn't mean that you'll become an English teacher. I've known people with teaching degrees who have ended up working in financial instutitions. Your degree does not force you to have a particular job!

What you should do depends on where you'd like to be in 10 years and where your interests are. Do you want to be a writer or a photographer? Is there a way of combining both? In which case, which would benefit you most: studying mainly photography or studying mainly literature?

Go to school Take your pick of a major. While in college take some courses you are interested in, you are not to old to change what you want to do, most people change their jobs 3 or 4 or more times in their life before finding something they love to do and get paid for. Teaching is a way to reach other people and share ideals pictures do the same thing, you could get into so many things you could stay in college for a long time, but you need to eat so Pick something that will let you pay your bills and eat, and work at what you love most and mix the things you love with the things you will do. 19 is not to old!

Choose a major in the Arts group. Even photography comes under arts.
Since you are so interested in Arts, why don't you take the related major which will lead to a career that you are interested in.
But dont choose Photography as your maor. May be, touchwood, you may not find it interesting in the future and may change your interest; you will have a different major so that, that can become your base and you can reach any summit relating it.

as you like art and writing i suggest that you find a good art college because you can take pictures on a camera write about your work.if you were in England it would be a lot easier because you could go to art college and study English with the open university(you work from home in your spare time)from a clever 14 year old. and if your stuck type American art colleges into google or yahoo search engine-good luck!

well, you need to research what you can do with that degree. if you major in american literature, you don't have to be an english teacher. you could go on to write for news columns or magazines. you can also minor in american literature and major in photography. also, your professors and your counselor can help you find what you can do with those degrees. just do as much research as possible...whether talking to people or looking on the internet. its never to late to learn, and if you really like it, your passion for it will make you learn as much as possible.

You can do a double major or you can major in one and minor in the other. You could also go into journalism which would combine both your love of writing and photography.

Just start taking all of your core classes and then the classes that most interest you take them. You will be surprised how it all falls into place. You know you can always get a double major as well. Good luck.

I suggest majoring in Communication. That covers lots of writing jobs out there in newspapers, magazines, tv, film, and radio. Being a photographer is largely self-taught in my experience, and will only help you with whatever Communication job you get.
