Which one of these is better in terms of performance?

Go with the Core 2 Duo. You'll get better battery life, it's faster, and more efficient.

Another thing you definitely want to look at is the amount of memory. You want the one with the most memory, since this is likely a Windows Vista machine. I would recommend something with 2Gb of memory (2048 megabytes RAM).

Whichever has more memory, go with that one (both are good processors). If both have the same amount, go with the Core 2 Duo.

The Intel processors tend to be better, but since you don't play games you can get away with an AMD one for cheaper.

They're both Screamers, buy the one that best suits your needs.

TIP: If you're going to be doing heavy duty work, such as gaming, editing video, CAD, etc., buy the fastest PC out there, price should be secondary to performance. AND, pay attention to the graphics quality. Very few laptops allow Video card upgrades.

if you're into gamign, go with AMD. amd is always the bes when it comes to gaming. if not, then go with the core 2 duo.

Both are good with there own limitations. AMD is better in performance. Intel good for long run for programming tools.
