I had experienced a lot of viruses from flash drives by the time when my classmates entered their flash drives on my laptop during their powerpoint presentations of their dissertation.
All the time there's a risk in entering a website with virus. Most websites of universities and big companies are less likely to have viruses for they have virus security measures.
I strongly advise that you have some system restore (point) settings free from viruses. In case your computer gets virus then you can restore your computer to that previous settings free from viruses. This is what I do with uncleanable viruses. After the system restore was runned the virus was also gone.
So far I managed to remove the viruses and Trojans with the AVG free edition and AVG Anti spy.

McAfee Siteadvisor and Crawler Toolbar. And No unless someone intentionally, downloaded the virus onto your USB flash drive, because if the virus was on the computer (it would delete all the data), if there were worms and trojans/malwares (the computer would malfunction or be watched remotely and accessed and wierd things would happen such as CD player thing open, screen turns black, mouse won't move) and assuming that you are an experienced user, you have an anti-virus/anti-spyware and a firewall. But yes it could be in a USB flash drive if only it got spreaded from hard drive to hard drive or you downloaded it/or someone else.

No,you won't get the virus just by inserting the infected USB flash drive or any other media,as long as you don't open any files or attachment in it.Scan all folders, files and attachment to make sure it is save but than again new viruses are popping up like wildfire and you might not have the latest virus update,so if you are in doubt, don't use the infected media.
Safe sites are those recommended by your trusted friends. You can surf to any sites but do not download anything especially Active X from sites you don't trust or don't know anything about.
