I have a 4-gear auto box which causes chugling when TCC is locked (3rd and 4th gear). Once the brake pedal is touched it unlocks it and the chugling effect goes away. That led me to assume there's some tranny slippage occurring. I know fixing TCC with "open surgery" can get very pricey. Any other way?

It's not a slipping problem, it's a problem with the TCC--- torque converter is locking up when it shouldn't be which is why hitting the brakes unlocks it and the effect goes away. On some models, the TCC solenoid is fairly easy to replace...on ones that are harder, I've seen websites that explain how to disconnect it or bypass it at the wire harness plug although you will lose some gas mileage. Year, make and model? Maybe get quotes from a trans shop on bypassing/disconnecting the TCC solenoid or replacing it.

Your symptoms are not consistent with the transmission slipping. Sounds more like the T/C clutch.

When was the last time you had the transmission fluid flushed and the filter changed? Make sure you inspect for large particles in the fluid.

"chugling" ? is this vibration, the engine lugging or what? Better description is needed.

as the above poster stated, try a trans addative such as lucas oil "transmission fix". I've heard lots of good things about this stuff, it stopps your trans from slipping and helps it run smoother. Give it a try, its available at your local auto parts store.

For a temporary fix try a additive called trans-medic (provided this is an automatic)
