open a jar of jam. I've got jar opener, but it seems to have clamped the lid on even more.

Turn the jar upside down and then bang the bottom of the jar with the flat part of your hand (palm). Don't hit it too hard though because it absolutely kills your hand. Bang it with your hand two or three times and you should find that you can open it. Failing that you can run it under hot water for a couple of minutes - this does the trick too.

If it is a new jar that is still pressure sealed, tap the edge on the floor or counter and you will hear the pop as the seal is released making it easier to open. If it had been opened before it may be just sticky so run the top under hot water to loosen the grip of the left over jam.

Tap all around the side of the lid with the handle of a knife, just firmly enough to leave little indentations behind, then tap all around the top of the lid in the same manner. This usually works for me.

Carefully make a small hole in the lid with a hammer & nail (or any sharp object). This should release the vacuum.

Remember...righty tighty, lefty loosy. Turn lid counter clockwise to losen, clockwise to make tighter. that could be your problem.
