Oh! This is my favorite genre. Ditto with novels. I love so many, it is so hard to choose. But, do you remember a movie from once upon a time about Robby the Robot? I believe, that might have started sci-fi movies. I just remembered, it was called 'Forbidden Planet'.

I enjoyed the movies listed by the others. Was Close Encounters of The Third Kind included? Can't remember. That was a great one.

And there's a notable difference between horror and sci-fi and that should be distinguised.

I do like vampire movies too (I think it's a female thing lol) but that would be horror, not really sci-fi. Same goes with the devil movies and the likes.

I could go on and on as you see, but I'll stop here!

Most of the great ones have already been named, so I'll put in my two cents worth even though it's not a one-of-a-kind answer. My favourite Sci-Fi movie is....

The one which I sat through twice the first time I saw it.

The same one that I've thought about since, especially just before I was about to turn 30.

The one where Peter Ustinov shone as a "character",

The one in which I was deeply touched by the state of the world after leaving the theatre and opening my eyes.

While it didn't have the hype and hoopla of the Star Wars trilogy, the Star Trek treks, the lovable presence of an E.T. we all wanted to bring home, or the heart breaking fable of a little boy's inexhaustible quest for the blue fairy, or an incredible theme of Alien Contact through music, or through mind, or the oomph of all the blockbusters ever since, it had an intriguing plot line, sparing but effective special effects, strong characters, and a universal theme.

So.

I'd have to choose

I'm going to tip my hat to "The Fifth Element", "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind", "Star Wars", "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" and "2001: A Space Odyssey"

But my all-time favorite Sci-Fi movie is "DUNE", the director's cut of the 80's version is my favorite. Followed closely by the newer version, which was a Sci-Fi Channel mini-series.

I really though the original 1977 "Star Wars" movie was great, and I still find it to be among the most fun and influential Sci-Fi movies ever made. But the original 1968 "Planet of the Apes" had more to say, so I'd have to give that one the nod for favorite of all time.

The Day the Earth Stood Still, starring Michael Rennie and Patricia Neal.

True there are many other brilliant ones, like Blade Runner, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and The Planet of the Apes

And fun faves like Star Wars

But TDTESS is an absolute classic of science fiction and American cinema.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) Dir: Steven Spielberg

Close Encounters is a landmark science fiction film, not only for its special effects, but also for its portrayal of UFO occupants as benign, even kind, which was a sharp departure from the "evil monster" style of most earlier films. It popularized a number of UFO motifs, many of which had earlier been reported in conjunction with UFO sightings, such as alien abduction, small and thin aliens ("greys"), and UFOs covered in lights rather than the disc shapes popular in the 1950s and 1960s. However, the seeming moral contradiction between the UFO occupants' benevolence and the forced abductions they conduct is left unexplored.

That's a tough one, 'cause I love a lot of sci-fi movies. Probably a toss-up between "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and "Forbidden Planet".

Star Wars - The Empire Strikes Back

As much as I love Star Trek, it's gotta be Star Wars, Episode 4, the original and best of the franchise. Totally blew my mind when it came out when I was kid.

But a sentimental favourite of mine has to be John Carpenter's 1988 'They Live' a film of alien infiltration
with the immortal line of Rowdy Roddy Piper of "I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ***... and I'm all out of bubblegum."

Peace
