We're kinda laid back at my house, so watching tv while we eat is ok. We don't do it that often though because there's carpet in my den, and an18 month old with a plateful of spaghetti and off-white carpet just don't mix!

It really depends on individual opinion, as some might think that watching and commenting and laughing along to a movie with family is better than socializing over a meal on the table. But it can also be the other way around, though, as people might think it is like detaching yourself from your family if you're just staring at a screen. I don't really think it is old fashioned, as family togetherness is almost always good. And, being around a TV seems even more modern.

In a perfect world, the dinner table is the place for good conversation and the time for the family to catch up on how everybody's day went.
However, in the real world.....
Many people dine alone, and there's nothing wrong with eating in front of the TV. Then there are some households where getting poked in the eye with a stick would be a more fulfilling activity than conversing with one's spouse (not that I'm speaking from experience, mind you), and if it's OK with both, well.....
Then there are special cases.....last episode of the The Sopranos, NFL Sunday, Liverpool's on the telly, Stanley Cup Playoffs, a blockbuster movie coming to cable, etc.

I watch tv during dinner its pretty much the only time the TV is on ... I never really enjoyed the tv so I pretty much watch maybe two shows and turn it off.
My MIL is litterally addicted to tv she lives infront of the tv so I try to avoid the tv as much as possible so I don't turn out like her. Sitting there for 56 hrs straight...

Our family doesn't watch TV during dinner, unless there is something very important on. But that only happens a few times a year.

We do it all the time, beats talking to each other. Just kidding, but I do like to zone out during meals and I think it's rude to talk with your mouth full. And, when people ask me a question when I'm eating I have to wait until I stop chewing. So, that's annoying to me.

Heck, I watch TV while I prepare my meal AND while I eat. Of course, I live alone.
I think I would feel differently if I had someone living with me at the moment.

we do not watch tv during meals, its distracting and annoying. dinner is one of the only times i can spend with all of my family just chatting. now, if i was living alone that would be different. then i might watch tv during meals sometimes, too keep me company and such.

I don't remember the last time I had a meal without the TV. It keeps me company so I don't eat alone.

Only if we are all really interested in the same thing. We are pretty casual here. I like it with out the T.V. if we are all together at the table, it's fun.
