One thing you could ask is, is he/she board certified? That means they were doing extra studies and were certified in their field.
Also, make some phone calls to see if there is a medical board to find out certain doctors. Start with your local health department. Maybe call information to see if there is a 800 number for the American Medical Association. At least they could lead you in the right direction.

I went for some scarey surgury. To make sure, I got a doctor (my GP) to do some checking. You need a good relationship with the GP to tell the truth and not just be reassuring. Tell them you are still not sure if you should go to that guy or look for another option.
My GP checked with an anethisist from the operating hospital and heard that a lot of support staff want to work with my surgeon. That helped me a lot.

the state licensing department for physicians has a record of all complaints and suits brought against a physician
it tells the complaints but not the outcomes also what board speciality certifications does he have
you can also check the state medical board and what hospitals he is on staff with
the bigger and better the hospital the more experienced he probably is

It helps to ask the nurses! I know they can't tell you important information like lawsuits, but, they know about how well the Doc handles the patient after surgery. I don't know about you, but to me, the better a surgeon follows up on a patient tells me allot of how he feels about his patients, ie: are they people or are they "GOMERS". I was a Cardio Pulmonary therapist for many years, and when my ex father in law (a surgeon himself) asked me which surgeon should work on him, I was able to tell him who I trusted, & who I admired as a complete doctor. (he wasn't one of them, believe me!!!) He went with my recommendation since I see all the doctors "all" the time. You want to know who the best surgeon is, ask a nurse who they would request!!!

Get more than one opinion and then check with your state Medical Board to see if he/she has any punitive actions against them. A lot of times that is much more informative than lawsuits. Especially since there are a lot of frivolous malpractice lawsuits.

Try looking here for complaints against the doctor: http://www.ratemds.com/social/
To find out if your surgeon has been accused of malpractice you will need to go through your states department of professional licensing.

If you google" health grades" It should bring up something where you put in your Dr.'s name and it tells you if the Dr. has had any complaints against him or any malpractice issues. It also tells you where they went to school and what their specialty is. Good luck.

Check the BMA website, usually there is someone you can email to check whether a doctor is who he says he is.
