If you are asking a question based on our own scientific beliefs of the begining of life, then my answer makes sense.

In physics it is said that if you knew the locations of every particle, at one time, you could know all the locations, at any other time. You could tell the future! This means that it is possible to tell our future desicions, and our future selves. This also means that whatever started the universe (God or random ) as a result, or meant, to make us, to make life. So the answer to your question is not far off from your taboo of the Big Bang.
That in one way is "Why" we have life. I have heard another saying that goes like this " we exist because we can exist ". This means the the universe is coded for evolution and that everywhere evolution is possible, it will happen. The universe is enormously immense, so big to include a place we call Earth, that is just the right specifications to support life. "we exist because we can"
Life as I see it, is a complex reaction of the same material that makes up anything. String theory and Unified field theory support this. That means that what life is, is really the universe. We are part of something so much bigger and that we are trapped in a way, in that we think we are just life but in reality we are immortal. The explaination is so great but I think that it must come in a different answer. And perhaps with some prior knowledge of the subject
I will give a link to a great address, explaining the unified theory and how our conciousness is actually a collecion of the conciousness in all matter. It is great and makes implications such as why neurologists cannot find our conciousness, it is awesome.

Life is an opportunity to learn the value of a loving response. The better we get at it the more difficult the lessons get.

Life is a product of physics and chemistry. We, Homo sapiens, as part of this continuing litany are but a small fraction of the great cycle.
