people are using my property as a short cut to get accross town

Your best bet is to create a barrier as it is cheap and easy.

Rather than spending a lot of money on a fence, you can easily put some stakes (from a hardware or garden store) in the ground and tie some string around them, acting as a barrier.

You may like to make some small signs saying "Private property. Please keep off the grass." Being polite disarms people who may be annoyed that you have changed their usual walking path.

As a home owner you have every right to dictate what happens on your proprty within the law. Be careful not to let anyone's hot headed desires to use your property as a short cut push you into a dangerous situation. If someone doesn't agree with your cordoning off of the property you should call in the authorities rather than do it yourself.

Good luck.

First of all, you make it sure that yours' is a joint account where you do not keep all of your hard-earned savings.Except for the part of savings purpose, keep your money in fixed deposits only with nationlised or International banks and do not let your money go into the hands of chit-funds which are growing like mush-rooms everyday.Last but not the least, attach or donate your property to religious trusts after your death(which is certain for everyone one day)with amajor portion of it going to your spouse and children.Do not donate your valuable money to beggars(people who want to cross accross your property).Be bold enough to give police complaint in case anyone threatens to make a crossing accross your property.Do everything in a sound mind with the help of your beloved and best friends.

Either you put up a fence or better still if they do not affect the property in anyway then ignore the whole thing. It wont take anything out of you to make life easier for people around you by allowing them take shorter walks.

Land mines?
Deep covered pits?
Trip Wires?

Your only viable options are a fence, blocking their entrance and exit, and posting no trepassing signs.

You could turn into the crazy neighbor and stand out there with a shot gun and scream at everyone -- but now adays that would get you in trouble.

check local law regarding easements before you put up that fence -- google will find it for you.

in many US jurisdictions, if they've been using the property [did the foot traffic create a pathway you can see?] for a specified period of time, an easement for public passage is presumed to exist even though neither you nor any previous owner explicitly granted one.
