I hate to tell everyone this, but Saturday Night Live (and specifically Christopher Walken) got it wrong. The song DIDN'T use a cow bell, but a wood block (another percussion instrument used in the orchestra and usually attached to the base drum on drum sets). There's a distinct sound between them and anyone that's ever had any musical training, especially in percussion, knows the difference.
