I mean people who can sing and have beautiful voices. Not good looking girls with a cute butt who added breast implants to their charms, and jump around, screaming into the microphones: "baby baby life is crazy, world is lazy", but people who sing. I remember once passing a railway station, and there was a choir in national costumes, both men and women, staying on the steps, signing Christmas carols. God, they were wonderful! They had no accompaniment at all,
just their voices and the conductor. People gathered around and cried, hearing them. Some tried to pay them, but they refused, saying that they missed the train, and were warming themselves up. Later on I found out, that they were from some small village, all of them, just people, and the conductor was a music teacher, and they made a choir, and later on travel all the Europe for free, because they were invited to sing at restaurants, and hotels, and got paid for it.

I never saw anyone on American TV who can sing. I understand, that this music is needed, too, you won't dance at Christmas carols, but where is at least ONE singer who can sing? With a touching, wonderful voice? The country is so big, can't they find at least one? And they are bound to have music academies or what not. Is it because they like only to LOOK at people, showing pretty bits of pretty bodies and
faces, or something else? I doubt very much that their so called singers can sing a song without any accompaniment, on fresh air, say,
and touch the public.
After all, if simple people can teach themselves singing, maybe the people who made it their profession can do the same?

of course I am categorising people. Singers must sing and doctors do doctoring. If the good looking people call themselves singers, they must sing. Or are they dancers, dancing along with electronic music? Then they must dance. Or they are just pretty men and women, showing off? Well, we have a cashier in the local supermarket, an extremely beautiful young girl, much more so than you see on TV, why don't you go and stare at her? If "singing" is reduced to "stare at good looking
people of both genders"

I'm sure that there are some. It's only that you won't find them on TV. They are outside on the street waiting for somebody that will appreciate them and not their appearance.

Back home ( Croatia), once per year we have a festival of street performers. I can tell you that there is much more singers over there than on the most popular music show.

First of all, this does NOT just happen in the U.S. It's happening all over the world, so don't single us out for that. But yes, I agree wholeheartedly.

There are many good singers in the US. Sadly, they're not the ones that get the radio airtime and make the huge $$$; record labels go for marketability. The question that comes first is, "can they sell albums?" Secondary is "can they sing?"

It's a shame, really. I'm sick of most of what I hear on the radio these days, and find it so much better to turn on the old standards station around here. I'm tired of hearing "singers" who turn every note into about eight different ones to add "style," when they're actually just hoping that one of the notes is the correct one. Too few singers know how to sing a song straight anymore. Too few singers are musicians. Too many "singers" sing from their throats, and not enough have heard of the word "diaphragm." It's like nails on a blackboard, including some of today's top-selling "artists." There are too many "recording artists" and not enough "singers." That's just a word you don't hear anymore.

In addition, too many singers start out by singing great, with good songs, and that's what makes a name for them. Then, when they get famous, they're just thrown the same "pop" garbage from songwriters and record labels. When will they get the message? That stuff isn't what got them there!!

The popular TV show isn't called "America's Best Singer." It's "American Idol." Sure, the judges do have some ear for actual talent, and that's a good thing. Some good singers have been on that show, but some of the best ones have been among the eliminated. Some of the good singers on that show have run into exactly the situation I mentioned; they sing incredibly well on the show, get famous, then are fed the same old garbage when it's time to do an album. Ugh. Then we're told by the marketing geniuses, "this is a great singer! Buy the album! Hurry!"

And too many of us believe it. Too few people today actually appreciate what it means to be a good singer. They want to imitate what they hear on the big radio stations, and it keeps the vicious cycle going. That's OK, it's fine to like what you hear. No problem with that. I just wish that good singers singing good songs got more airtime.

That said, there are still so many out there who can belt out a tune like nobody's business. They do exist. Some of them are good performers, as well, and I hope they survive. I really do.

Go to Barns & Noble, click on Raul Malo and take back your question. Want to hear him really sing??? He was the lead singer for The Mavericks. Listen to a sample. Based out of Nashville, born in Cuba, english is his 2nd language and thier music cant be placed into any one catagory.
Or listen to Martin Sexton sing "Glorybound" or America the Beutifull. Rani Arbo and Daisey Mayhem.....silly name but what a voice she has. Or David Wilcox, Rusty Old American Dream. Or the 3 part harmonies of Cry Cry Cry. Have we forgotten James Taylor????

Do I have a CD for you! There's a new choral CD out by a woman who sings all four parts, soprano, alto, tenor and bass, and it's all a cappella. I think you would like this one. There is no accompaniment at all, and the Christmas songs are very old, but few people have ever heard them. The website is http://www.nancybarrow.com. It's a wonderful CD.

I don't know what you listen to but there are many excellent American singers. My personal preference in music is "Southern Gospel" and "Classic Country" and there are many American singers. So take your fingers out of your ears and move away from the speakers and you will hear the beautiful sounds of American singers.
