Barbie Dolls! These dolls give girls very unrealistic views of the human body, what is considered beauty...when a girl has it hammered into her head that unless she is Barbie perfect, there is something wrong with her, it cannot be anything BUT ugly. We have anorexia and Bulemia today (did you ever hear of that when we were growing up?) We have nice looking girls who think they are ugly, simply because they don't measure up to Barbie ( and here, Barbie is a metaphor for unrealistic role models ....catwalk models who look like escapees from a German camp, "stars" who starve themselves to death in order to get a role, ... where does it stop? Bring back Raggedy Ann..all girls are prettier than Raggedy Ann! How would men feel if they were taught, through sight and action, that if you don't resemble GI JOE, you are a loser! Boys don't get that pressure, but girls do...from boys AND from other girls....ug, what a way to live!

Cabbage Patch dolls are so ugly that they're cute.
The ugliest dolls I have ever seen are on the toy shelves this year. I am a "new" gramma and have not looked at toys in awhile... I could not tell you the names. I might also add I have seen some very beautiful dolls while shopping, too. Too pretty to be toys or a 2 year old's "baby".

You know, I went into Woolworths with my kids one September day. They were very small, with the oldest around 7 and the youngest 4. Ahead of us at the end of the open aisle was a HUGE stack of cartons with dolls in them. My two daughters were enraptured with them, saying they wanted ones that looked like them, but I took one look at them and couldn't BELIEVE that anyone would try to market such UGLY dolls! They also wanted $20 each for these things and I thought THAT was just outrageous. $20 was actually WORTH SOMETHING in 1982.
Well, it wasn't long before there was a FRENZY for these "cabbage patch" dolls, with my girls claiming they would JUST DIE if they didn't get one for Christmas....
It took many, many trips to many, many toy stores to find one for each. Of course, by that time the price had DOUBLED. I will never forget that two weeks of endless searching in order to pay through the nose for something I could have gotten easily just three months before then.
And do you know, they STILL HAVE those dolls 26 years later, packed away with all the changes in clothes my mother made for them? Amazing.

I'd have to agree with you about the Cabbage Patch dolls. They were soooo ugly that, like certain breeds of dogs, the ugliness would become appealing if you looked at it long enough!
On the other hand, I'd dearly love to have a couple of American Girl dolls.

I was a tom boy, didn't like dolls but I had a stuffed cowboy doll that could fit the ugly doll, but I never considered him as being a doll. My sons thought cabbage patch dolls were funny, they used there sisters to toss and kick, she didn't care. If they dared to touch one of her barbie dolls or any of their clothes it was war.
