I see so many people use them wrong, I've known these since 2nd grade! Same with You're, Your, Its, It's. Are teachers not doing their jobs right anymore?

It seems to me that there is a general malaise with spelling in English and why that is I don't know. Perhaps it is the use of internet and SMS text slang, or the lack of reading, or maybe teachers who don't care.
What concerns me is the degree to which people misread things and so totally misconstrue the information simply because they cannot distinguish between words.
I assume you are in the US as you refer to 2nd grade.
It is much the same here in the UK.
I think here too much emphasis is placed on passing grades and exams and not enough on the content of the answers given, so spelling takes second fiddle to getting the answer correct.
Then again language is not a fixed thing and so it is perhaps undergoing a mutation and will once again create new boundaries that will be different to our present ones.
