They steal. That is their only objective, to gather wealth. Oh, and forget about all that scurvy dogs mumbo jumbo, that ended 100 years ago. However pirates do exist. There are pirates, the people that make illegal copies of anything from software and movies to handbags and lipstick. Then there are the pirates in the more traditional sense who go around robbing merchant and cruise ships. They hang around areas where the shipping routes are forced to squeeze through narrow paths between land masses. That way it's easier to tell exactly where you're target is and it's also easier to stop them and disappear after the operation is complete. Oh, I forgot to mention, the don't use canons any more.

Pirates have been on the seas since the time humans used the seas to travel. Some of the stories regarding individual pirates and curses may be myths, but pirates themselves are very real.

The traditional priate your thinking of existed in the 14-18th centuries, but more modern pirates do exist. Drug traffickers, smugglers, bandits on the high seas, are all things Pirates do.

Even stealing music of the net or copying DVDs illegally is pirating.

You don't have to dress like Blackbeard and sail a Spanish Galleon to be a pirate.

Piracy is a robbery committed at sea, or sometimes on the shore. Seaborne piracy against transport vessels remains a significant issue (with estimated worldwide losses of US $13 to $16 billion per year, particularly in the waters between the Pacific and Indian Oceans, off the Somali coast, and also in the Strait of Malacca and Singapore, which are used by over 50,000 commercial ships a year.
The earliest documented incidence of piracy are the exploits of the Sea Peoples who threatened the Aegean in the 13th century BC. In the popular modern imagination, pirates of the classical period were rebellious, clever teams who operated outside the restricting bureaucracy of modern life. In reality, many pirates ate poorly, did not become fabulously wealthy, and died young. Unlike traditional Western societies of the time, many pirate clans operated as limited democracies, demanding the right to elect and replace their leaders. The captain of a pirate ship was often a fierce fighter in whom the men could place their trust, rather than a more traditional authority figure sanctioned by an elite. However, when not in battle, the ship's quartermaster usually had the real authority. Many groups of pirates shared in whatever they seized; pirates injured in battle might be afforded special compensation. Often all of these terms were agreed upon and written down by the pirates, but these articles could also be used as incriminating proof that they were outlaws. Pirates readily accepted outcasts from traditional societies, perhaps easily recognizing kindred spirits, and they were known to welcome them into the pirate fold. Such practices within a pirate crew were tenuous, however, and did little to mitigate the brutality of the pirate's way of life.

Pirates do indeed exist, but in far lower numbers than in times past: increasing the number of pirates may be one of the few things we can do to help slow global warming

They do exist and they are quite active on either side of the Strait of Malacca, between Malaysia on one side and the Indonesian Island of Sumatra and off the coast of Somalia. Often, the objective of the pirates is to rob the crew and get money usually kept in a safe on board for payment port charges and payroll fees. Other pirates steal merchant ships cargo.

The modern day pirates do the same as the ones from the old storybooks, they plunder and they pillage for money and riches. There is no honour amongst them and they do kill people for fun as well. They disguise themselves well with the general public so that they might not be as visible as they are if you see any of the movies about pirates.

They do exist out on the open seas. They do the same things they always do. They rob ships of cargo, they kill, they steal ships. I haven't heard of a good pirate in todays marine experiences yet.
They are smart now too. They used high powered boats and have all the correct weaponry. They're out there right now looking for their next victim. It happens each and every day.

What IF?
There are historic pirates like Blackbeard as well as modern day pirates, who target cruise and cargo ships. The difference between these two is that modern day ones have modern day weapons, making them MUCH more difference.
