I had a student loan for my last semester of college (in the 80's). Yes, it was paid off within a few years.

I paid as I went along in the 80's. Part time at a community college is very affordable.
I put the 2 classes I am taking now on my credit card. Not too expensive either. $110 for 1 credit hour at Lorain County Community College in Ohio, USA.

No such thing when I was a student, thank goodness. I had a student grant which didn't have to be paid back. I wouldn't fancy leaving university now, already £12,000+ in debt.

A merit-and-means scholarship, but not a loan.

Yes, it has been a painful experience. It hurts to pay that bill every month.
