It depends on what you want out of a machine. I have a Bernina that is 30+ years old that will sew forever, but it only does basic sewing. The newer Berninas are able to do some of the high end artsy stuff like "needle felting" and "free motion" with relatively inexpensive attachments for the needle. For embroidery, I have a Viking which has excellent customer support and is doing things in embroidery that the other companies are catching up to. Since Pfaff is owned by Viking, it has the same capabilities and customer support. Embroidery machines (or any other computerized machine) are going to have computer issues regardless of brand. If you are doing basic sewing and want the the last machine you will ever need to buy, go Bernina. If you want the latest, cutting edge, go Pfaff (viking).

Elna xquisit or Bernina 165e. Im a curtain maker and ive had my Elna 26 years and its a cracking machine. Still as good as the day I brought it and I wouldnt be without it. I think in all those years I have had my machine repaired once. I love it that much that I actually brought the identical machine off of ebay for about £70.00! I n my opinion the other machines are not in the same league. I do not have any experience with Bernina machines but I know that they too are excellent machines. I hope this information is of use to you.

I also have a Bernina that is thirty years old. I inherited it from my mother and I have never had a bit of trouble with it. It sews through any fabric from light to upholstery and vinyl. These makes are all good but expensive so ,it depends what you want to use it for. Sears sells Kenmore machines which are affordable and very reliable. On thing I would suggest though is make sure you get a 1 step buttonholer because eventually, you will probably want to do some buttonholes. Mine has a 3-step buttonholer but is a pain because they don't all come out the same.
