Can anyone suggest reasonable yet decent hotels in Vegas in the downtown or strip area. About 6 of us are traveling there for the 1st time and would like to have a good time. Any sites you know of that will give good rates. Any good shows, etc.

Holla back.

East Coast Travelers -
On the strip I suggest Bally's. It is a very nice nuts and bolts hotel with a small casino. It is connected to Paris and includes all the amenities offered at Paris. There is a monorail stop, which is nice. It is in the middle of the strip and if you get a strip side room it should overlook the Billagio fountains. Lots of other nice hotels, did not like Circus Circus or Imperial - stay away from there. We are going in December and have decided to stay downtown at the Golden Nugget. It is a 4 star hotel and I have fallen in love with downtown, although this will be our first time staying there. That is not to say we will not go to the strip, it is not hard to get back and forth. It is just so much more quaint and easily accessible than the strip. The Bally's Buffet was great and there are all kinds of themed places to eat that are fun to do depending on your likes and interests. Definitely book a package, we looked at flight and hotel separate vs. packaged through Allegiant and the difference between two flights and two flights plus hotel was like $50! Crazy. There's yo holla!

Here are a few sites you can try for pricing.

http://www.hotelscombined.com/ - searches multiple sites for the best prices.

http://www.groople.com/hotels/default.aspx?source=CJ&kw=468x60-generic-2-1 - if you are looking for multiple rooms for your group

http://hotels.travelzoo.com/las-vegas-hotels/ - great for hotel deals and even some las vegas show deals!

Some affordable hotels that I can suggest are Luxor, Excalibur, Ballys.

Excalibur and the Luxor are closer to the airport side of the strip (south side). Ballys is mid strip close to the Bellagio, Caesar's Palace and Paris Las Vegas.

Avoid Hooters - stayed there this past summer for 2 nights and was unimpressed with it's filthy windows and stained carpets! Also the Tropicana next door seems rundown looking on the outside, doesn't make you want to come into the casino. If you find good deals MGM, NYNY, Planet Hollywood and Monte Carlo are also great options.

The only two shows i've seen in vegas was Cirque Du Soileils Zumanity at NYNY and Le Reve at the Wynn.

Zummanity is an adult show with nudity (topless) Its like a sexually charged Cirque show. Tickets were around $75 for balcony seats and go up from there.

Le Reve is simular to the Bellagio's O by Cirque Du Soilel. Same type of acrobats, high diving, syncronized swimming . Le Reve is at the Wynn hotel and tickets start at $100. The $100 seats are for the front splash zone and you will get splashed.

Enjoy your trip!

Just was there a couple of weeks ago. We stayed at the Riviera and had a great time for a reasonable price. The room which was a mini king suite was large, had a wet bar, seperate desk area and a king sized bed.

The room was updated and very clean. The staff was friendly.

Walked over to Circus Circus, the casino area was clean. We had stayed there years ago and found it to be nice.

Downtown, we've stayed at the Fitzgerald and had a great time. The only thing with their room was the bathroom was tiny. But the room was clean and again the staff was very helpful.

Look at vegas.com for hotels and prices. Though you may get better rates if you contact the hotels directly instead of using resellers.

Shows depend on your taste. We just saw a hypnotist at the Riviera and had a great time. Found a 2 for 1 coupon so it was around 30 bucks for us.

Went to Mystere', pricey but we thought it was worth it. Saw Jubilee, didn't care for that so much. And we went to defending the caveman. One guy tells people why men are the way we are and women the way they are. It was very funny.

Another poster suggested Allegiant Air if it flies from your area, That is the only airline I use to go to Vegas. Great fares and good package deals.

You may have a similar airline giving direct flights.

Have fun!

I would suggest Imperial Palace, you can get awesome rates and its a fine hotel, plus, it's in a great location ...http://www.myvegassecret.com/lvstripmap.htm ...
(remember one thing as always "you get what you pay for") obviously if you want luxuries, there are hotels for just that.... but you can even find some great rates on those hotels.... like right now the MGM Grand, which is my favorite has rates as low as $79 a night, which is pretty incredible for that hotel...

I would try http://www.myvegassecret.com , they review the hotels and let you shop around for the best rates on hotels and flights...

If you're going in a group of 6. I would suggest that you use a Taxi to get around in Las Vegas, the monorail only makes sense when its one or two people, but in a cab, all of you get to split a $10 fare , remember that to catch a cab just walk into the entrance of any of the hotels on the strip and they'll be lined up waiting to take you anywhere......

Holla!
The best way to get a cheap hotel is to go during quiet times - early December is the cheapest. The strip is more expensive than the dowtown. If you want to stay on the strip, perhaps the hotels at either end will be less expensive - luxor (carrot top performs and he's great!) and stratosphere (they have a roller coaster on top of the tower!). Reserve rooms through 'cheap hotel' web sites - you'll probably get a better rate than you would directly from the hotel.
Go to vegas . com to get ticket info on shows. we usually see a comedian and a cirq show on each trip.
there's plenty of cheap places to eat on the strip, save your $$ for one good dinner out - make reservations. best time to gamle is during the day and early evening. if you gamble later in the night, you play w/ drunks and dummies. keep your $ in your front pocket with an elastic around it. if you don't know the rules of the game, ask. enjoy, enjoy, enjoy. we go 3x a year and we still find new things to do and enjoy.

Best Western is a reasonable hotel. It's not on the strip though. It's near the airport. They offer free shuttle to the strip and it leaves and pick up every hour. The daily rate includes a sumptous buffet breakfast.

It is all on Fremont street. The best is the Gold Nugget. Main street hotel is #2, and lady luck casino is #3. Go to the webb site below and check them all out. Stay away from #6 because it is not on Fremont Street with the Fremont Street experience.

If low cost is an issue, on the strip, Circus Circus and Riviera are very reasonable. Downtown 4 queens is low cost. I don't know your departure city, but you should checkout Allegiant Air. they have good package deals. Some shows are sky high prices, but Tropicana has lower cost shows.

Golden Nugget and the Plaza. The Blue Man Group is awsome.
