Why wait for a falling star? You can make wishes whenever you want.

A falling star is simply a bit of rock or dust falling from outer space into the Earth's atmosphere. Most often they are as small as a grain of sand, but the friction of falling into the atmosphere makes them get hot and eventually burn up. That's the flash of light and why it only lasts a second or two.

I'd personally rather make my wishes over a birthday cake or a chicken wishbone...
