I agree, the case is the first thing I buy because it defines what the rest of the computer should be(and goes in of course). Now if I'm building a computer in a case I already have, than I look at motherboards first because all other parts that go into the computer must be compatable with that one bit of hardware.

A pencil and paper to work out what you need, because you shouldn't buy anything before you've decided on everything! Besides, it won't work until you have everything. Keep in mind that you can buy 'barebones' systems these days which come with the essentials and are quite cheap.

Case, but CPU or motherboard would be my answer if it was only a major upgrade.
