That depends on the type of raspberry. Some raspberries produce fruit only on second year canes. These types of raspberries should be pruned twice a year. In fall, after harvest, prune out the canes that produced berries. These canes will die and need to be removed to keep a raspberry bramble free of disease & insects. Prune in spring to thin the number of new canes.

Everbearing raspberries are best pruned if fall. Pruning all the canes to the the ground will improve the following season's yield and quality.

Pruning is always best done in the late fall. By doing it in the fall your plant will have time to rest all winter. Pruning in the Spring may cause the plant to not produce well the current year.
