you have a point. that's right we cannot close our ears or something but it doesnt mean our mind focuses on what someone is telling us. so its not a stupid question for me.

the normal attention span of a human within 24 hours is just only an hour.(with the mind fully focused)

anyway.listening and hearing are different from each other in w/c case hearing is a sense and listening is a process of understanding what you hear.

I have more of an opinion about your grammar!

To answer the second part of you question:
is a stupid question?!?
Many thoughts abound about what constitutes a " stupid question" Here is a thought ......there is no such thing
as asking a stupid question. Anyone that asks a question wants to learn therefore it adds to their intelligence.

Now for the first part of you question;
''r u listening ??''
Are you asked that question a lot? Does your English instructor say it to you more than 3 times daily in class?

Now for the final part of the answer.
You must determine that for yourself.

Well see, there is a difference between 'hearing' and 'listening'. When you are 'listening', you are actually paying attention to what a person is saying and comprehending it. When you are only 'hearing' them, your ears are picking up the sound, but your brain isn't interpreting it for you, because you are paying attention to something else. So no, it isn't a stupid question.

It is because as you say, we cannot switch off our hearing ability. We hear, no matter what. Yet, since :hearing" is different from "listening", we might say that sometimes the "r u listening" is not that stupid!!
Because we can hear but not listen to.

Hearing is just recognizing noise, listening involves actually paying attention to what is being said.

Why? Are you listening? Listening to the world...the news...the messages everyone is trying to give us. Is it such a dumb question? People don't have to be specific...it's for your thought and opinions...

Any question asked not actually using proper spelling is a stupid question.

I think it's called selective hearing. Like hearing only what you want to hear.
