Long ago, the chalkboard we know is not yet green at that time. Instead, it was black. Time goes by when the ancient people changed the color into green. It was because green refreshes your eyes, making your sense of sight to relax. Even if the teacher writes lectures, your eyes will not be easily get tired while taking notes.

Before the current composition boards were used, they were made from a black slab of a sedimentary rock called slate and were called blackboards because of its color. The name stuck around.

Green or black, they're all long gone from this part of the world (Devon, UK). All we have are white boards, to use with non-permanent markers or the interactive type that works like an enourmous touch pc screen.

It actually used to be black, b/c it was originally made of slate,
which is a black rock, I believe.
Nowadays, I think it's some other material other than slate...thus the green boards.
