I am thinking of getting a couple of hermit crabs as pets. How long do they live for and has anyone else ever had them? Also, what essential kit is needed apart from vivarium and heat lamps?

I think hermit crabs are not good for pets because they are commonly seen at the dikes facing the sea.

You need a lot of things to know if you really wanted to make them as pets. When I was a kid, after a swimming trip I usually bring with me this hermit crab and it stays alive only for a week at home.

I picked some up off of the beach when the navel ship I was on stopped at White Beach, Okinawa.

I made sure to have extra shells for them to wear as they got bigger.

I kept them in one section of my bunk with water and food from the mess hall. They lived all the way back to San Diego.

I let them go free out at the rocks of Point Loma, San Diego.

I wonder of any of them or their offspring are still alive?

Hermit crabs are easy to take care off. Remember, as they grow, they need bigger shells.

yes. i've had hermit crabs, they're actually really cool pets. my hermit crabs lived for about 3 months, i'm not sure if that's accurate for an average hermit crab life though because mine died while we were camping (i think something ate it). but we didn't have anything for our hermit crabs exept a little plastic case some sand, and a wet sponge. our friends who have 10 hermit crabs have a big clear rubber maid and it's filled with sunflower seeds (the non-salted pet kind) and they have a water dish with a sponge and a little dish for the food.
i don't really think an essential kit is needed unless you really want.. just research hermit crab habitats online..
i hope i helped!

I did, but I was very BAD at it, I knew nothing. Sadly, they passed away during shell transits. I felt very bad about it.
