That's enough space to hold about 160,000 songs. I can't imagine anyone needing that much space.

First when the disk manufacturer calculates disk size they use
1000B = 1KB
1000KB = 1MB
1000 MB = 1GB
You computer calculates disk size it uses
1024B = 1KB
1024KB = 1MB
1024 MB = 1GB
so your computer measures the 500GB drive it measures it as
500/((1.024)(1.024)(1.024))
=465.6 GB

Windows must have at least 15% free space for defrag to completely and adequately defragment it. Defrag uses this space as a sorting area for file fragments. If a volume has less than 15% free space, defrag will only partially defragment it.

465.6 GB x 0.85 = 375.8 GB
375.8 GB can hold
54,970 ea. ..7 MB MP3 Songs

500 GB is a lot of space!
You can store much programs and data on that computer.

500GB will hold 145 hours of quality video, 50,000 JPEGs (jpegs are high quality pictures) 100 DVDs or 250 hours of HDTV
a song is usually 3 to 4 mb u do the math
so thats like 125 thousand songs.

assume each song requires 5 mb space
where each 1 GB is (1000 MB)
so
1 gb = 200 songs
10 gb = 2000 songs
100 gb = 20000
500 gb = 100,000 songs
and so on

Enough to store about 500,000,000,000 characters on it. Not exactly that number, but roughly.
And it's enough to store 300,000 to 400,000 hi res pictures on it.
(Hey, G! Is that short for Gates, first name Bill? Didn't you also say that 640kb of memory would be enough for anybody..? :-)
