The thing that is left out after setting aside all the wordily elements and the setting aside of substances created out of worldly stuff, that is, five elements( panchboot) is the spirit.
Wholesome awareness of the spirit within the frame makes a person spiritual.

We are spiritual only if we so desire. We are highly evolved primates and there are not any spiritual powers just emotional people. Spirit is mood and we all have good moods and bad moods. Some of us can "conjure" up a good mood and that's what spirituality is but also some can "conjure" up a bad mood and that's also spirituality. This ability is intrinsic and not everyone wants to be bothered with it as it's a false utopia. Reality is what we objectively see, hear, feel (physically) and smell. Spirituality is what we assign to what we see, hear, feel and smell. Candles set a mood or tone due to fragrance as well as pictures and so many other things.

For me spiritual has nothing to do with what we know, who we believe ourselves to be, neither can any religion, belief or concepts about reality capture and express spirituality.
We are all spiritual at root, but our knowing and wanting to have meanings and sense is what gets in the way of connecting with our simple essence. Yet knowing is a stepping stone that can be used to find out the truth.
Feeling that we know who we are is the main obstacle that prevents us from connecting to our spirit and the spirit of other beings. The majority of people don't want to ask the question: 'who am i', simply because they are content with how their life is going. If something bad happens, then the cause is always given to something on the outside and one feels like a victim. When problems mount and unhappiness becomes the norm, then a person becomes ready to quit giving the blame to the outside, and start confronting themselves and questioning their own behavior. When this starts, spiritual aspects of oneself emerge slowly as the predominance of 'being the personality' is reduced.
As long as we feel we know something and are content with that, then it is this attitude which keeps us frozen in time - trying to cling to which can't be held onto - and thus we become unflowing and non-spiritual. The nature of spirit is that it can't be held onto.
Jumping into the unknown is scary, it feels like death for us or like we are losing something, but in the end it's the only way to connect to spirit. We have to learn to quit clinging to the outer forms which includes ourselves, and this 'surrender' we will have to do over and over and over again. When we surrender our 'knowing' then we are open to recieve and be a vehicle for the expression of spirit.

Spiritual means that we have the nature of spirit within us. Sacred and religious are within its context. But not all person are spiritual. Each person thinks differently and have different beliefs in life.

In my view, spirituality is to recognize an existence beyond matter.... an opposite of materialism. At the base level, we are aware of our existence through the impact of our physical senses, both inward and outward impacts.... like when we say something or do something or see something or hear something etc. etc. This is obviously limited to the world of matter and energy. This makes a first and rather strong impression on us.
At a second stage of awareness, we recognize our existence through the thoughts and emotions that come into our mind.... this makes us aware of our inner personality quite unconnected with the physical senses that give us physical experiences. This inner personality or existence is psychological.... we get to know and deal with this psychological personality of our own as well as others... this gives rise to impacts related to the mind, both inward and outward.
We then realize that we have an existence even beyond this psychological personality.... there seems to be something metaphysical in us that molds and influences our mind through some basic inclinations..... these inclinations are apparent even in small children who have not yet developed a psychological personality through interpersonal relationships.... these inclinations are ascribed to the soul and are noted to have far reaching influence on the mind and through the mind even cascading to the physical self. These basic inclinations on their part, remain quite steady through our whole life and undergo only minor corrections, that too only through very major events in life. This self is the spiritual self and its steadfast character of stability over the whole life gives us the clue that this must be our real innermost self which makes us tick the way we do.
Spirituality thus is dealing with this innermost self and its steadfast inclinations... a normal life just gets influenced by the basic inclinations, whereas spirituality aims at recognizing and purifying them in order to uplift our being so as to attain the 'tranquil and stable' happiness (joy) rather than the exciting and transient happiness that our physical and psychological experiences can at best provide.
Religion as well as God are the means that have been created and used through ages in order to achieve the key objective of purifying and uplifting our spiritual self. Spirituality can lean on various other means as well such as meditation, yoga, introspection, penance, selfless service to humanity etc. etc. It is indeed believed that these methods do produce special spiritual powers that people can not have otherwise, even leading to ability for miraculous deeds in the few very advanced cases.
However, there is no scientific evidence as yet of the existence of any independent spiritual self.... and thus the current thinking equates it with more entrenched mental make up that has been molded since birth through the various experiences having interacted with genetic tendencies of an individual. Spiritual powers in this context then is no different than the mental capabilities of an individual as developed over the years and miracles are considered only as events whose causes remain unexplained or unexplored.
Hope this makes sense.

"Think of your self as a Spirit on a human journey not
a human on a Spiritual journey."
Jesus left us with a spirit with in to draw upon.
You can be spiritual with out religion.
Not all are spititual, but all can be. If we believe in such.

For me, spirituality entails a sense of connection with all "other" - but it has nothing to do with religious or similar fantasies, which only serve to separate us from reality, and therefor any real sense of relationship with "other". For me, those fantasies are merely the product of fear, the inability to live with uncertainty, or to acknowledge ignorance - and ultimately, unfounded delusions and inappropriate hubris.
