Taking the law into your own hands is wrong. Call the police and ask them to take care of the problem. Going in with guns was just stupidity. I think they set him up to look stupid personally.

It is absolutely right. If it is yours, you take it back. Stealing from a thief is not stealing.
Since this question is in the "Psychology" section, the response is purely psychological. The laws can be different in different countries.
The bottomline is, take back what belongs to you, by request, threats, deception or force.

If you're the same notorious guy that we've all read about, then you should be locked away for a long time for your wicked and violent behaviour. Nothing justifies intimidation.

Possession is nine-tenths of the law, I've heard.
People are supposed to go through the process of the law -- if everyone were a vigilante, it'd be a much more chaotic and evil world than it is today. 'Cause the thing is, everyone thinks they are right, and the other guy is wrong.

IF you had given that thing of yours to someone then taking it back might not sound good. but If you had not given it to them and now taking your stuff back then ask them for it, if they don't agree then you should try to get it but avoid not to get involved in any illegal action. Involve someone else.

"stealing" is something that you take it without asking someone who has it. Even though it was yours, and if they take if from you, or borrow from you, but they do not return it, you just have to ask them give it back. If they won't give it back to you. Take it from them and tell them that "i just took watever is mind."
