crime writer as in fiction? it's called mystery.
well, you have many routes, but mystery's an intensive genre to write in that requires vast amounts of knowledge, and I would say is one of the few genres of writing that would require a college education, though not in writing, or some serious personal research.
if you want to write right now, just start thinking of ideas, work your way to one, and focus on it until it's practically alive in your head, then sit down and start writing, if you truly have a writer's imagination, you will understand.

Just start!
I would suggest joining a creative writing group (there are many such in Yahoo Groups).
Just write something - anything out of your head, and see how you find transcribing from the mental picture to the written story. It's not all that easy at first; because your mental processes are much faster than your ability to transcribe them.
But you will be amazed how soon your writing improves with practice. The secret is to write. If you DO have a strong imagination, it is all the easier. After writing for a while, you will find that you can recall your vocabulary much more readily (so you ar less likely to think 'now, what IS that word').
If you do join a group, don't worry about negative comments. You will KNOW when you are ready to start writing seriously.
That's what I did, and I've published over 500,000 words in short stories (not for profit, just for the enjoyment).

Cool! Be a profiler. Have you watch the Criminal Minds drama, you need to get a test first then being one of the FBI.
That is the perfect job for you.. but, if you still want to become a writer, read newspaper or news at tv. Look for any new cases and solve it. send your solved probs to the FBi but, still write your own story and sell it to the press!
Your condition is nearly the same such as the Psych drama..
