what is the male counterpart of mistress?

*NOTE: "Antonym" means the opposite. Fast/slow, pretty/ugly, etc.

But given our still-sexist society, there doesn't truly exist a male title counterpart to "mistress." (His wrong-doing needs no title, much like a promiscuous woman gets the name "slut," but a man who sleeps around gets called...???)

The closest would be probably be "lover," as in literature, they usually say something like, "His wife took on a lover."

The antonym would typically be wife when referring to a relationship.
Gigolo is really equal to a female prostitute, so would not be the male counterpart to mistress, which does not necessarily involve monetary compensation.
Most women would probably refer to the person simply as their "Lover" as opposed to husband.

It will depend on what sense of "mistress" you mean. If you are looking for the opposite of the "mistress of the house" meaning the wife or woman in charge of the household, the opposite would be "master" as in the Master and Mistress of the house.

If you are talking about a "mistress" as in a girlfriend outside of a marriage, the opposite might be "paramour" (a fairly old word) or simply "lover".

The male counterpart of 'mistress' (extramarital sexual relationship with one man) is hard to find. 'Lover' could be used for both genders but, the way it is used in contemporary times, it doesn't really mean behaviour outside marriage, etc.
