The trend is going to change very soon. It is not true to say that Indians do not lack killer instinct. It is our bad fielding that lets us down. When the rival team is strong, if you are not able to take straightforward catches and at times, convert half chances in to a fine catch, you cannot hope to win. The euphemism for this inability is called 'lacking killer instinct'. The main reason for the two teams, Australia & South Africa, being on top is fielding. Without this basic quality, they do not pick any player.
If India cricket board could ensure this, our team will be neck and neck with any team in the world.

Unfortunatly that is the sad part of indian cricket for the past many years. May be because the players lack the mental tougness, determination and fighting spirit. Till now most of the players were guaranteed of their places in the team irrespective of their performance. Now that the situation has been changed and as many new players are waiting in the wing, the players will have to work hard to retain their place in the Indian team, and we can expect a change in the near future.

I think as a team they didn't win the 50/50 pressure situations during the series. There were many times when the game was in the balance and they were in a perfect position to grab it, but unfortunately for them they were not able to. Someone would let the valve open and the Australian team would take advantage of them.
Just sustaining the pressure, and staying as consistant as they can will help.
As for why, I can't say.

1. Strong partnership put up wasn't there. 2. Consistency in terms of understanding, running between the wickets and strike rotation were not there. One match they win and they loose the rest. In that way, I love australians the most.

The Indians practice non-violence and therefore lacked killer instincts.

We are not known for sustained pressure and often release the hold instead of mounting pressure.
