I am looking into buying some memory for my computer

After looking up the memory specs for my motherboard, it says my motherboard has "2 x 240-pin DIMM sockets support non-ECC 400/533 MHZ DDR2 memory modules"

Can someone explain this to me. At first I thought I only needed to look for memory with 240 pin discription but now Im not so sure.

The motherboard specs are calling for either PC3200 or PC4200 memory. Which one you purchase will depend on if you are totally replacing all the memory on the MB or just adding to it. If you are replacing it all go with the PC4200, it is faster. If you are adding additional memory, the current memory will most likely be PC3200. Kingston is the type of memory I mostly use. I think the model number for Kingston's PC4200 1 Gig stick is KVR533D2N4K2/1G.

Basically it's saying that your computer take DDR2 Ram at 400/533Mhz. the 2X tells you how many slots for Ram sticks you have. Now all you need to look for is Ram that says DDR2 on the box/description. You also need to look for is the speed. The description also has to say 533Mhz. Now some forms of Ram come registered with ECC. You need a none ECC. Some examples of Non-ECC 533Mhz DDR2 ram are located here.

The top three are very good examples. If you want to by locally ask the people in the store for there Ram selection and they should point out the ones that will fit in your computer.

Well basically it means you have a bit of a sucky mother board it will only support upto 533 Mhz DDR2. That's really the important part non-ECC 533Mhz DDR2. Now the size of the stick it can handle, totally different story, but most likely 1GB sticks would do.
