Why not just Van or Zant - you'll probably have to explain it to most people anyway

It's a cute name for an adult who really really likes Skynyrd...but you can't really 'force' a nickname on your child when you don't know his personality or anything yet (thats why they call them 'nicknames' - they are given to you by someone who knows you and your interests well enough to create an alternate name for you as a term of endearment). What if your child decides early on he hates music? Or he only likes rap music? If you really like southern rock, play it for him while he's growing up and see if he 'takes' to it. If he does, the perfect nickname will pop into your head then.
