The real name of our country is Bharat which means ''Land immersed in brightness''. where as english sayings like"too many masters and not enough indians" make me feel as though word indians means slaves or workers who have got no brains and need to be driven by masters.
When in fact we are hard working people with lots of brains.
if Bombay can be changed back to Mumbai, can the name of the country changed officially back to Bharat for good?

The name 'India' comes from the Indus River, the Old Persian word Hindu, from Sanskrit Sindhu, the historic local name for the Indus River. The ancient Greeks referred to the ancient Indians as Indoi, the people of the Indus.
Origin: < L < Gk Indía, equiv. to Ind(ós) the Indus river
Bharat is the Hindu name and is commonly used within the country.but not internationally. There is no real reason for this.

The name if India came from the river "Sind". When foreigners came to this place, they noticed very good civilisation and culture prevalent in a country on the banks of The river Sindhu. They don't know the actual name of the country and informed their people about the prosperity of this country by calling it "India". So we need not consider ourselves as slaves. We inherit the high qualities of sincerity in work, honesty in completing the task. Indians occupy a sizable share in many high positions in US. I feel this sufficient. Bharath is named after the great king Bharath s/o Dhushyand. Both are good. Be proud of being an Indian instead of identifying in the name of religion, caste and colour. Long live Bharath.

India is a beautiful name that came to this country because you have to cross the river Indus to come to this land from the west in those days. My parents even remember an American man who named his daughter 'India' because she was born in India when he was delegated there. Don't think too much and confuse your poor brain. Only if you let people mock you, you get mocked. Only if you behave clanish, will people group you with a name stuck on it.

The saying is "Too many chiefs and not enough indians." It means that there's a lot of management, but not enough people actually working.
The "chiefs" and "indians" in this case are actually the mis-named Native Americans of North America. So, while it is a racially insensitive saying, it actually has nothing to do with the nation of India or its people.

I do see different perspectives and answers when google about this saying. I came across this blog while searching for why we don t call our country as Bharat (which is also used in our Constitution). I really doubt that British folks had any respect for our people and mostly think they started using based on this saying thought later they may have came across (or found) better meaning. Or I sometime think they might have made the saying as they were ruling Bharat and thinking they are the masters. Anyway my point is why can t we assert and officially declare our country name as "Bharat" and make sure we are recognized with that name internationally as well as domestically. Why can t we use our own identity rather than using the Persian or Greek word (if its derived from there). Thoughts?

it comes from river Indus. whoever says India is a land full of slaves is a stupid, foolish, idiotic moron who has no manners and disrespects and underestimates India, mostly because he/she is jealous.

India is a modification of Hind, which came from Sindh. I never heard of that being used as a substitute for slaves.
