Nothing is guaranteed because there are new ones that come out everyday. I use AVG 7.5, and Ad Aware SE Pro, and never had a problem that couldn't be solved. As far as the free programs, you get what you pay for.

NO anti-virus can ever be relied upon to give 100% protection. None of them do. Most only detect about 85 to 95% of all KNOWN viruses. When a brand new virus is released , NO signature-based anti-virus will detect it for several hours up to several days. And dozens of new viruses and other malware are created each and every day.
The best computer security is that which resides between the keyboard and the chair!

AVG and Avast are the best free programs, but Norton is the best paid program. The downside to Norton is the fact that it is a memory hog. If you don't have at least 1 GB of RAM then it will slow down your computer. The two free ones don't do that.

No single anti-virus software can remove all the viruses and new viruses are always being developed for which all the major anti-virus software people develop the needed upgrades.

I Like AVG not because its free but because it's good,i have had Norton and got a virus plus i paid for Norton AOL gave me Mcafee for free but i uninstalled it and went with AVG on all my computers and i love it.

I have used Zonealarm suite for several years. there are also some good free programs , AVG,Avast.
