The difference between restaurant food and home cooked food is normally salt and fat. Restaurant food tastes good because there is so much salt and fat. That's where the flavor comes from. Personally, when I cook, I use no salt at all (except baking) and as little fat as possible.

Usually the foods we get from restaurants/fast food are pre-made and they just heat them up when an order is placed. I worked in Red Lobster for a bit and I know that in the morning they had food preps that would put together all the dishes so they would be ready to go for when the restaurant opened in the morning. So, restaurant/fast food contain maybe preservatives, lots of sodium, lard (fat)...more so than if you cooked it at home yourself. When you cook at home you don't have to use preservatives because you are going to eat the food right after you cook it.

1) You know your kitchen is clean
2) You control the ingredients (Salt, dressing, oil)
3) You can prepare it how u want (steamed, baked, broiled)
4) Chances are you will buy fresher ingredients. Maybe even organic. You know how long a food has been sitting there.
5) You wont have all those unhealthy preservatives that prolong shelf life in your food.

When you're cooking at home, you have control over how much grease, salt, or butter goes into the foods you cook...you put the ingredients in yourself..
AND
a lot of those salads are fullll of fat. You're better off making your own and using Light dressing.
