Most Tercels came with the Toyota 1.5L which has an interference fit engine, so yes, if the timing belt breaks you'll more than likely damage valves and score pistons.

You won't know there's a problem with the timing belt until it breaks. The timing belt is an all or nothing type deal. Always change timing belts at the manufacturer's recommended interval to minimize the chance of damage on the engine.

So I would definitely recommend getting the belt replaced soon.

Timing belts cost between $300-$400 to replace, with the majority of the cost going towards labor as the cost of most timing belts is around $50. Most mechanics recommend doing the waterpump also, as the labor to tear down to get to the water pump is already done. A water pump will typically cost you an additional $150 in parts and labor.

I second the last answer, change the belt BEFORE it breaks, it should be around 300 to 400 dollars. And I also recommend water pump replacement at the same time. You have already torn the engine down to that point, might as well take care of another chance for engine breakdown while you are in there. It will reduce the chance of future repair costs, and 90,000 miles to a water pump is not a bad investment.
