common denominator:
multiply by 6 all the way across:

6 ( y/2-5y/6+1/3=1/2)
3y - 5y + 2 = 3

That look easier??

3y-5y +2 = 3
-2y = 1
y = -1/2

Check:
(-.5)/2-5(-.5)/6+1/3=1/2
-1/4 + 5/12 + 1/3 = 1/2

Common denominator again: Multiply by 12:
12(-1/4 + 5/12 + 1/3 = 1/2)
-3 + 5 +4 = 6
2+4 = 6
6 = 6

Since this is true,
y = -1/2

y/2-5y/6+1/3=1/2

3y-5y+2/6 = 1/2

-2y+2/6 = 1/2

-4y + 4 = 6

-4y = 6-4

-y = 2/4 = 1/2

y = -1/2
