You can make a case for all four, actually, but your teacher probably wants D.

Aerial combat resulted because both sides wanted to prevent spotters for the enemy from flying over their trench systems and spotting where to fire their artillery, and especially from spotting the troop massing that would precede an attack.

Naval battles (Jutland) occurred when the German Admiralty, desperate to do something to break the stalemate, finally took a risk and brought its main battle fleet out from their well fortified bases.

Chemical warfare, like the tank, was developed in an attempt to do something to break the stalemate created by the trench system and achieve the long sought breakthrough.

But trench warfare was the immediate result when, after the German advance was stopped at the Marne, both sides dug in. That was the dominant feature of the Western Front from September 1914 right up until the end of the war.
