Echo makes only 2-cycle engines, and have no plans on going 4-cycle. They are also a Japanese company. Stihl makes 2-cycle, and a hybrid 4-cycle engine they call the 4-Mix. It has four strokes, but no separate oil reservoir, and runs on a 50:1 Mix. Stihl is a German family owned company.

I have worked on both engines and I like the Stihl. Easier to work on.

The German company Stihl. I bought an Echo once and it was a huge mistake. It did not last very long. I have 4 Stihl chainsaws and on leaf blower and they are worth the extra money.

I lived in the North woods of Minnesota and burned with wood for over thirty years. I have always used a "Stihl" chainsaw with no regrets. I have never had a problem with the more then several I simply wore out.
