It's almost a comical word and not serious enough to be considered a insult don't you think?

Nah. You're right, it's a comical word, especially next to the other words you can be called. I call my brother a twerp, it's actually turned into a nickname by now. It's rarely used as an insult, it's more commonly used to poke fun at someone.

I would find it amusing since people who use words like that are usually what I call "intellectually challenged". Replying by calling them a "subsimian anthropoid" usually draws a blank stare, exactly as I expect from people who have "twerp" in their everyday vocabulary.

Here is a quote..............Noun 1. twerptwerp - someone who is regarded as contemptible
twirp, twit
simpleton, simple - a person lacking intelligence or common sense. twerp also twirp (twûrp)
n. Slang
A person regarded as insignificant and contemptible. I think that if the speaker of this remark is known to be my friend that it would simply be a joke,,,but if this was said to me by someone not considered as my friend then it would be offensive to me.

If it was a male I would just hit him and walk away. No problem.
If it was a female I would definitely have to just walk around.

Twerp is a insult in it's own way. It all depends on how you take it. I was brought up as a insult. I take it as an insult.

Chances are the person using the word is too young to know what it means, and ignorance coming from people who are trying to offend me just makes me laugh in their face.
